Social Media Affecting Families

When was the last time you switched off your phone and spent quality with your family members? Can you actually take the time to have a one on one conversation with someone without pulling out your device; distracting you from your talk. Whether its sitting down and eating dinner at a restaurant or just watching a movie, people are sitting on their phones scrolling through their social media feed instead of valuing the things around them.

Family dinners have now become the latest celebrity gossip instead of meaningful talks and sharing how everyone’s day went. However, if we take the time to think about it, how are many topics brought into society going to help us get anywhere in life? How does knowing when Kylie Jenner’s newest lip color will be available really guide us to the important things in life? The answer to that question is that many of these topics hold little to no significance to us for the real world.

It is consequential to spend every second you can with your family before it’s your time to leave them. Our generation has yet to realize that family has the biggest impact on our lives. They pay for our education. They’re also the ones that understand us more than any other people in the world; this is what we need to open our eyes to see.

In the article “Social Networks Cutting into Family Time,” by Sharon Guadin, she discusses recent research at the Annenberg Center for the Digital Future at the University of Southern California reports that an increasing number of people say they using their Internet and social network sites is eroding the time they’re supposed to be spending with their families. As mentioned before, family is the most meaningful gift that can be given to us in the world. We take our families for granted sometimes; they don’t receive the recognition they deserve. Most of this is caused by our electronics, which ultimately leads to SOCIAL MEDIA.
